Five things to consider when selecting your RPA service provider
- Use-case guidance. If their suitability assessment is based solely on process factors, RPA is still a ‘concept to them’. The hardest part for RPA is training the robot to use your applications as a human, namely all the buttons, drop-down lists, and pop-up windows. Without a target application suitability assessment, they can only speculate which mapping techniques to use. This means unrealistic estimates, sub-optimal designs, and reworks which all adds up to costly delays.
- Speed and scale. If you’re building an in-house robotics capability, your provider should be explaining how to maximize your return on investment. Time and toe-dipping kill RPA initiatives despite best intentions as leadership unavoidably gets fatigued by lack of material results.
- Quality. Establishing and maintaining coding standards, shared utilities and templates early saves time and money. It enables code reuse, simplifies testing and makes your automation easier to support in Production. After all, quality is a function of hardened expertise rather than good intentions.
- Your solution architect. Your solution architect will be the difference between your RPA success or failure. Spend time with the architect who would be working with you. Understand how they will provide a robust solution that scales and has components that could be reused in your other automations.
- Training and mentoring. Is the provider serious about making you self-sufficient with bona fide training capability and periodic audits of automated solutions? Evaluate their ability to train, certify and support your people as they learn. If they can’t help your people become great, their resources probably aren’t great.
